Pigments are dry coloring agents of mineral origin that do not dissolve in a binder.
They are introduced into the composition of primers, putties, greases, paints, enamels and mastics to achieve the desired color. Also, pigments are used as an agent that inhibits corrosion or imparts magnetic or other special properties.
The color characteristics of the pigment depend on the chemical structure, on the shape and size of the particles. However, pigments are never in their primary form, they form aggregates and agglomerates in the system.
Therefore, any pigment must be subjected to dispersion. In the process of dispersion, the separation of pigment agglomerates and the wetting of the pigment surface with the dispersion medium take place. If the pigment particles are not properly dispersed and stabilized in the coating material, the benefits of a high-quality pigment can be lost.
Pigment groups
Pigments are divided into two groups: organic and inorganic pigments.
Organic pigments are synthetic coloring compounds that impart different colors to materials and have high coloring and opaque properties.
They are widely used in the paint, varnish, silicate, polymer, flexographic, leather and textile industries.
Inorganic pigments are made on the basis of minerals, as well as from the ore of some metals, by chemical or thermal processing. They are produced in the form of a colored powder insoluble in water.
