Iron oxide pigments are dry coloring agents of mineral origin that do not dissolve in a binder. They belong to the group of inorganic pigments and are produced from natural minerals or metal ores by chemical or thermal processing. The pigments are supplied as a colored powder insoluble in water.
Iron oxide pigments are introduced into the composition of primers, fillers, greases, paints, enamels, and mastics to achieve the desired color. Due to their chemical structure, particle shape, and size, they can also perform special functions: inhibit corrosion, impart magnetic properties, and ensure high weather resistance of coatings.
To realize all the advantages of iron oxide pigments, proper dispersion is required. During the dispersion process, pigment agglomerates and aggregates are broken down, and the pigment surface is wetted by the dispersion medium. Without high-quality stabilization of the particles, even the highest-grade pigment will not provide the expected color development and protective properties.
Note: exact values for color, hiding power, dispersibility, and special properties depend on the specific grade of iron oxide pigment and are provided on request.
Iron oxide pigments are used in paint and coating materials (paints, enamels, primers, fillers, mastics), building mixtures, coloring of plastics, rubber, paper, as well as in compositions requiring anti-corrosion or magnetic properties. Due to their non-toxicity and durability, they are widely used for both exterior and interior applications.
Organic pigments are synthetic coloring compounds with high tinting strength and opacity, often more vibrant. Inorganic pigments (which include iron oxides) are produced from minerals or metal ores and offer higher weather resistance, heat resistance, and color stability but may be less saturated in some shades. The choice depends on the required performance properties of the coating.
Pigment particles tend to form aggregates and agglomerates. Without effective dispersion and stabilization in the coating system, full color development and hiding power cannot be achieved. High-quality dispersion ensures maximum realization of pigment properties, from color brightness to anti-corrosion protection.
Pigments based on iron oxides, as substances of mineral origin, are generally chemically inert and non-toxic. They are not flammable or explosive. However, as with any powdered materials, it is recommended to avoid inhaling dust during handling. Specific safety data is provided in the safety data sheet for each grade.
