Set Retarders

Precise control of the pot life of a mix is a key factor in the production of complex gypsum products, decorative stone, mouldings, and repair compounds. Excessively rapid setting leads to defects and limits moulding possibilities, whereas a correctly chosen retarder provides a technological time margin without compromising strength. Alventus supplies effective set regulators — from a ready-to-use complex gypsum converter to pure tartaric acid, which enables flexible management of hardening kinetics.

  • Gypsum converter SVV-500 – a ready-to-use complex additive that significantly increases the strength of gypsum products. Its laboratory-balanced formulation requires no additional strengthening agents. It provides a slight, predictable set delay, giving extra time for moulding complex and thin-walled elements. Compatible with pigments and additional retarders (tartaric acid, citric acid). Non-toxic and odourless. Used in the production of decorative stone, 3D panels, mouldings, garden figures, and any gypsum products with enhanced requirements for hardness and abrasion resistance.
  • Tartaric acid (L-(+)-tartaric, E334) – an organic dicarboxylic acid of natural origin, appearing as a white crystalline powder without odour. In construction chemistry, it acts as an effective set retarder for gypsum and cement mixes. Unlike citric acid, tartaric acid does not disrupt the gypsum crystal lattice, preserving the maximum grade strength and hardness of the finished casting. By binding calcium ions, it slows down hydration and provides anywhere from several minutes to tens of minutes of additional working time for pouring and moulding. The food additive E334 is approved worldwide, is safe, and is easily metabolised by the body.
