The purity, density, and thermal resistance of a refractory material directly depend on the quality of the alumina used. It is aluminium oxide that forms the basis of high-temperature concretes, corundum mixes, and ceramics, determining their strength, thermal shock resistance, and chemical inertness. Alventus supplies key types of alumina with controlled characteristics — from ultra-pure tabular to highly reactive fine powder.
Main Types of Alumina
Choose the type of alumina to go to the relevant catalogue section and explore detailed specifications.
- Tabular Alumina – chemically pure aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) produced by sintering at temperatures above 1800 °C without sintering aids. Its platelet structure, closed porosity, and melting point up to 2040 °C make it the ideal aggregate for refractory castables, gunning mixes, and corundum products operating under extreme thermal cycling and abrasive loads.
- Calcined Alumina – aluminium oxide that has undergone high-temperature calcination to convert it into the stable alpha modification (corundum). It features controlled primary crystallisation and optimal thermal shrinkage. It forms and bonds excellently with calcium aluminate cement or clay, delivering increased mechanical strength, wear resistance, and precise dimensions of finished refractory and ceramic products.
- Reactive Alumina – fine corundum powder with submicron particle size (average D50 — 0.5–2.5 µm). High reactivity and the fine fraction allow particles to penetrate the voids between larger aggregate grains, forming a super-dense packing. This lowers the sintering temperature, reduces the amount of mixing water without loss of flowability, and multiplies the strength and resistance of low-cement and ultra-low-cement castables.
